Privacy
Statement The Federation of American Consumers and Travelers (FACT)
respects the privacy of its members and all other subsequent visitors to its
Web site. FACT feels that is an absolute necessity to be forthright and honest
regarding online activities. To this extent we are providing you with an
Internet Privacy Statement that will assist you in understanding how the
information you provide us with is used responsibly and appropriately. To
protect your online privacy, FACT has agreed upon the following statement:
What information does FACT
collect? Most of
the information that FACT collects is used for the sole purpose of better
serving its members. FACT only collects the personal data that you knowingly
provide. When you visit our Web site you may choose to knowingly provide FACT
with personal information that FACT collects on an individual basis.
FACT does track aggregate
data (number of hits per page, internet traffic ranking) that is used for
internal purposes only. Monitoring this type of aggregate data does not provide
FACT with personally identifying information.
FACT's Current Members
section requires members to identify themselves in order to access the
sections of the Web site reserved only for dues-paying FACT members. To gain
access to the members-only sections, members are asked to register and provide
some limited information that allows FACT to adequately verify the membership
status of the registrant. This information includes, but is not limited to,
first and last name, FACT identification number, and a user specific
password.
If you choose to correspond
with FACT (or a specific FACT representative) via e-mail or fax, FACT may
retain the content of your e-mail/fax messages together with your e-mail
address and fax number. FACT may also choose to retain the content of FACT's
responses to your messages.
If you ever receive an
e-mail from FACT that you did not want to receive, or believe you received in
error, simply reply to the e-mail and request to be removed from the directory.
Your request will be attended to promptly.
What about legal disclosures?
In order to maintain Web site security,
or to respond to legal process, FACT does reserve the right to disclose
information as required by United States law.
How does FACT
use the data it collects?
FACT only uses the information that you voluntarily
submit. Generally, FACT uses the collected data to process membership
requests. Survey data is processed, tallied, and stored. FACT surveys do not
request, nor do they collect, personal data from individuals. If you choose to
attach a personal comment or contact information to a FACT survey, you do so
willingly and with the full recognition that all the information you provide
may be used by FACT. Broadly speaking,
FACT uses personal information for the purposes of administering and expanding
our business activities, providing customer service, and making available other
products and services to our members and prospective members.
FACT does not disclose
credit card account information provided by its members and prospective
members. When members and prospective members choose to pay using their credit
cards, FACT submits the information needed to obtain payment to the appropriate
clearinghouse. Occasionally, FACT may request the services of online credit
card processors and identify verifiers. If FACT uses these online services,
there will be notification posted on the specific Web page, and it will be
known by you before you enter your credit card information.
What are Cookies?
A "cookie" is a very small text document, which often
includes an anonymous unique identifier. When you visit a Web site, that site's
computer asks your computer for permission to store this file in a part of your
hard drive specifically designated for cookies. All Internet Web sites can send
their own cookies to your browser if your browser's preferences allow it, but
(to protect your privacy) your browser only permits a Web site to access the
cookies it has already sent to you, not the cookies sent to you by other
sites. How does FACT use
Cookies?
Cookies, in conjunction with FACT's Web server's log
files, can allow FACT to calculate the aggregate number of people visiting
FACT's Web site, and which parts of the site are most popular. This helps FACT
gather feedback in order to constantly improve the Web site and better serve
FACT's members. Cookies do not allow FACT to gather any personal or identifying
information about you, and FACT does not generally store information gathered
from cookies.
What about
when FACT offers links to other Web sites?
This Web site contains links to other
Web sites. FACT has no control over and is not responsible for the privacy
policies or content of such sites. Additionally, FACT is not responsible for,
and has no control over, the content of other Web sites that link to
FACT.
Does FACT
endorse other sites? FACT may provide links to benefit providers or specific
resources. However, these links are strictly informational in nature. FACT does
not endorse, and has no authority over, the content of other non-FACT Web sites. Does FACT share
information with Third Parties? No, unless the fulfillment of our responsibilities to you
requires the sharing of information with a given benefit provider.
Who operates FACT's Web site? FACT's Management Services Office located in Edwardsville, IL
What means of
redress are available? If any Web site User suspects FACT has handled its personal information in a manner that
