It’s a new month and chance to start fresh. We’ve come up with 8 reasons why May is a lovely month and should put a smile on your face!
The month ends with a three-day weekend and the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day. May also brings Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, and for the superfans, Star Wars Day on May 4th.
2. Sports Fans Rejoice!
May is full of professional sporting events to keep you entertained. The MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS, ATP, NASCAR, and the PGA all have events throughout the month. With these events now open to spectators, you can look forward to taking in one event in person or many simultaneously from the comfort of your couch!
3. April Showers Bring May Flowers
It’s not just a silly rhyme. In many climates, flowers and gardens thrive during the month of May as the weather gets warmer. Stop and look around at the Earth’s beauty!
4. Farmers Markets and Art Fairs
Although many start in late April, regular farmers markets and traveling art fairs will likely be passing through a town near you! Brimming with fresh harvests and creative artisans itching to get out, it might be a great time to try a seasonal recipe or add a new print to your home.
5. Horse Racing
Although the final race typically falls in June, the three largest horse racing events start at the beginning of May. The Kentucky Derby is almost always held the first weekend in May, followed by the Preakness Stakes and ending with the Belmont Stakes in early June. Tradition plays a big role in the celebration of these events ranging from special wagers, outfits and cocktails in conjunction with the events.
The end of May also typically signifies the end of the school year for many children across the United States. The anticipation of the fun summer ahead and last few days of school is an exciting prospect for school children (and their teachers!) Take a breath of the warm air and let it take you back to that excitement.
7. Better Sleep Month
May is “Better Sleep Month” according to the Better Sleep Council. So, if you need an excuse to take that afternoon snooze or sleep in a bit longer, there you have it!
8. The Eta Aquariids Meteor Shower
These meteor showers are associated with Halley’s Comet. Peak activity for these shows is around May 5th, but are visible in the week before and after. The flexibility in these meteor shower’s visibility makes it more likely you will be able to catch a glimpse at some point barring weather issues.
