How to Renew Your U.S. Passport (Without Losing Your Mind)

If you are planning an international trip (or just like being prepared), renewing your U.S. passport should be high on your to-do list. The process is simpler than applying for a new one, but it still helps to know exactly what you need to do.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to make passport renewal stress-free:

Who Can Renew a Passport?

You can renew your passport by mail if:

• Your current passport is undamaged and can be submitted with your application

• It was issued when you were age 16 or older

• It was issued within the last 15 years

• It was issued in your current name (or you can document your name change)

If any of those do not apply to you, you will need to apply in person for a new passport instead.

What You Will Need

1. Form DS-82 – This is the official passport renewal form. You can fill it out online and print it, or print a blank one to fill out by hand.

2. Your most recent passport

3. A new passport photo – Must meet U.S. Department of State photo requirements: recent, 2"x2", white background, no glasses, neutral expression.

4. Payment – The renewal fee is usually $130 for a passport book (as of 2024). Pay by check or money order made out to “U.S. Department of State.” No cash or credit cards!

5. Name change document – If your name has changed and it’s not reflected in your current passport, include a certified copy of the name change document (marriage certificate, court order, etc.)

How to Submit

Mail your renewal materials to the correct address, depending on whether you want expedited service or not:

• Routine Service: U.S. Department of State, National Passport Processing Center, PO Box 90155, Philadelphia, PA 19190-0155

• Expedited Service: U.S. Department of State, National Passport Processing Center, PO Box 90955, Philadelphia, PA 19190-0955

Double-check the mailing addresses on the official passport website in case they’ve changed.

How Long Does It Take?

• Routine service: Typically 6–8 weeks

• Expedited service: Around 2–3 weeks (extra $60 fee)

Note: If you have urgent travel (within 14 calendar days), you can try to make an appointment at a passport agency, but spots fill up fast!

Pro Tips

• Start early – Don’t wait until the last minute. Many countries require your passport to be valid for 6 months beyond your travel dates.

• Track your application – You can check the status online about two weeks after mailing it in.

• Use a sturdy envelope – To protect your original passport and documents in transit.

Renewing your U.S. passport isn’t hard, but it does take some planning. Knock it out early, and you’ll be one step closer to that next adventure — whether it’s sipping espresso in Rome, hiking the Andes, or just having your documents in order like a total pro. FACT is always here to help you with your travel journeys!
